Not too long ago your only choice for pallets was timber, but today you can also get plastic pallets, which have their own unique advantages and disadvantages. But which are best for you?

Timber pallets

At first glance, timber pallets appear the cheaper and easier option. This is because of the basic raw materials used and simple contruction, compared to making a similar product out of plastic. And that extends to repairs too. You can simply go to your timber merchant and pick up the stuff you need yourself. In fact, you could make your own timber pallets from scratch if you wished.

This is especially important when you think about plastic pallets, which are not so easy to construct and very hard, or impossible, to repair.

However, it is not so simple.

Plastic pallets

The good thing about plastic pallets is that they are very hardwearing, and can be used many times sensibly without damage. However, the same usage would naturally damage timber pallets requiring them to be repair or replaced much more often. Because of this, in the long run plastic pallets, although more expensive to buy, can work out much cheaper.

Plus, plastic pallets are much easier and cheaper to work with because they are much lighter than timber pallets.

And even more than this, plastic pallets are much more important if hygiene is important to your business, as they are much easier to effectively clean compared to timber pallets.

Conclusions

For smaller companies that want to save money and have the time and resources to repair and manage their own pallet fleet, timber pallets could be the best option. However, any larger company continually shipping more goods will quickly find that timber pallets wear out too quickly and cost a lot of time and money in the long term. For this reason plastic pallets often make a better choice for them.

The alternative choice

However, buying your own pallets, whether plastic or timber, is just one of your options. The alternative is to use a pallet pooling (pallet rental) service. That way you can get as many of which ever type of pallet you need specific to each job. Plus, you don't have to worry about the up keep at all. You simply hand them over when you've finished with them.
